An experiment in spatial writing: text responds to pressure, speed and the direction of the hand. A lab still in development.
The problem
Writing on a computer is still a flat gesture. The keyboard doesn't know how hard we press, the cursor doesn't know where we're going. Vellum starts from a simple question: what if text remembered the body that made it?
The approach
An infinite sheet, a pen that doesn't exist and a light physics model. The stroke generates the character: speed, pressure and direction become weight, width and spacing. The result is typography that behaves like matter.
The system
Canvas for rendering, variable fonts for response and a small interpolation engine to keep the gesture continuous. Everything runs in the browser, no plugins.
What remains
A prototype that isn't a product yet, and that's exactly the point. Vellum is where I test the ideas that later enter real projects, more quietly.
